The Window Treatment

So many women are petrified at work. Men likely are too but as a #careerchangecoach for women I hear more from them.

After 40, most of us have been through some significant corporate crap.

It leaves a mark.

When will the next manager change the game? Misrepresent me on a review? Will I get laid off? Mary in accounting told me it's coming! What are the people in marketing saying behind my back?

I have a fix. It's called The Window Treatment and is something my psyche came up with in a #stressfulwork moment of my own once:

It was a dreary fall day in a small city in the Northeast. I knew I was in the wrong job. I was having horrible dreams about getting let go for reasons I couldn't even articulate. Every time my manager called me into his office, he changed the story on what he expected.

It was so stressful that one day I started imagining a window in between us.

I could see and hear him but his words just hit the window instead of piercing my thin skin and shaky confidence.

The window visualization worked! I could then function, but not actually absorb all the anxiety I had generated every time he opened his mouth.

Then on an even drearier day, he called me into his office and told me I was laid off. The sun shone through my window. It was a blow - but I was now free to move back West with less fear and with much more of myself intact.

Try The Window Treatment next time you are scared of what you might hear at work.

Let me know how it goes! I am also here to help.
