Flipping the Bozo Bit

Sometimes making a decision to leave #distressingwork is as simple as flipping the bozo bit. You may have already done it and not even noticed!

What is the "bozo bit", you ask? And what on earth does it have to do with your decision to do something new for your job or career?

Let me explain...

Many in the computing field will recognize this term as coming from a technical term describing setting a "bit" or "flag" to NO, such that a piece of data could not be copied in the 1980's Mac operating system. A lot of people at the time thought this was a dumb implementation, or a "bozo" approach.

This same term soon came to describe situations where someone's input wasn't worth listening to. And once that conscious or unconscious decision to ignore a "bozo" person or situation was reached, it was pretty much impossible to "flip it back."

(Go read Jim McCarthy's book on software development for more.)

OK back to humans and careers!

How many times have you spent days, nights and often months loudly decrying the new org structure, or the unfairness of your latest review, or the unexpected changes to your job, or even the old stupid laptop you can't get replaced until next year?

You are flipping the bozo bit with every breath and thought.

And how often can your negative opinion be undone?

Rarely if never.

You have already allocated your negative opinion, or lack of respect, or total frustration ("this is SO stupid") to that NO bit or spot in your brain.

What to do about it is the real kicker, eh?

Stay or leave? Sink or swim?
